How to choose a lab or medical chair or stool

Seating for exam rooms, clinics, labs and classrooms: medical and doctor stools, exam stools with a back, lab chairs in Desk, Medium Bench and High Bench Height, dental stools with a procedure arm, a saddle stool and sit-stands. Start with the seat

  • Medical stools, no back: round padded seats 14.5 or 17 in. across. See doctor and medical stools.
  • Exam stools with a back (doctor stools with a backrest): a 17 in. round seat with a Basic or Ergonomic back. See stools with a back.
  • Lab chairs: an 18 in. wide, 16 in. deep padded seat with a standard back, a Large Back or a Basic Backrest. See lab chairs.
  • Dental stools: a 17 in. round seat with a procedure arm on the right or left, in Medium or High Bench Height.
  • Saddle stool: a polyurethane saddle seat with locking seat tilt (8° forward, 3° back), 25.5–35.5 in.
  • Sit-stands: a 17.25 in. wide, 10.5 in. deep polyurethane seat for standing-height work, 21.5–32.5 in.

Pick a height class

Heights run from the floor to the top of the seat. Ranges vary by model.

  • Desk Height, 17–24.25 in.: desks and tables.
  • Medium Bench Height, 19.75–29.75 in.: benches and counters. A foot ring is optional.
  • High Bench Height, 24–36 in.: taller benches and counters. A foot ring is required.
  • Standing Height, 21.5–35.5 in.: the sit-stands and the saddle stool, for standing-height counters and workbenches.

Round tube base models have a fixed foot ring and sit higher: Desk Height 19.75–26.25 in. with caps, 21.75–28.25 in. with casters; Medium Bench Height 22.5–31 in. with caps, 24.5–33 in. with casters. The Retro Exam Stool sets its height by screw-lift, 20.5–25.5 in.

Upholstery, feet and capacity

  • Upholstered models: easy-to-clean vinyl with a stain-resistant finish, or 100% olefin fabric on most. Dental stools come in vinyl.
  • Saddle stool and sit-stands: self-skinning polyurethane that resists chemicals, soil and punctures, and wipes clean.
  • Self-Braking Casters for hard and carpeted floors, or non-marring glides, no wheels; chrome-hooded casters on chrome models; caps or Self-Braking Casters on round tube bases. Sit-stands come on glides.
  • 300 lb capacity, except 250 lb on the Lab Stool for Laboratory & Exam Rooms and the Retro Exam Stool.

What seat heights do your lab and medical chairs and stools come in?

Seat heights run from 17 to 36 in., measured from the floor to the top of the seat, in four height classes: Desk Height (17–24.25 in.), Medium Bench Height (19.75–29.75 in.), High Bench Height (24–36 in.) and Standing Height (21.5–35.5 in., the sit-stands and the saddle stool). Round tube base models sit higher: up to 28.25 in. at Desk Height and 33 in. at Medium Bench Height, with casters. A foot ring is optional at Medium Bench Height and required at High Bench Height. What is the difference between a medical stool, an exam stool with a back and a lab chair?

A medical stool has a round padded seat, 14.5 or 17 in. across, and no back. An exam stool with a back (a doctor stool with a backrest) has a 17 in. round seat with a Basic or Ergonomic back. A lab chair has an 18 in. wide, 16 in. deep seat with a standard back, a Large Back or a Basic Backrest.

Do you have a stool for dental assistants?

Yes. The Dental Stool with Procedure Arm, also in chrome, has a 17 in. round vinyl seat and a procedure arm on the right or left. It comes in Medium Bench Height (20.5–28 in.) or High Bench Height (24.5–34.5 in.), with Self-Braking Casters or glides, and a 300 lb capacity.

Should we choose casters or glides?

Most models take Self-Braking Casters for hard and carpeted floors, or non-marring glides, no wheels; chrome models have chrome-hooded casters. The sit-stands come on glides. Round tube base models take caps or Self-Braking Casters and sit 2 in. higher with casters.

What capacity and warranty do the chairs and stools have?
